April Blog

This is my exercises sheet that I received once I started going to physical therapy.  All patients under my mentors care receive this paper.  For every new exercise there are dates, this shows the progress of the patient after periods of time.  My mentor Georgine Hernandez also tells her patients to record an increase of weight or reps on these papers so that she knows we are getting stronger.

Blog 20: Exit Interview

(1) What is your essential question and answers?  What is your best answer and why?
What is the most effective treatment process for a torn ACL
1.The first step to an effective treatment process is to have an autograft surgery.
2.The best non-surgical treatment for a torn ACL is to have a stem-cell treatment
3.An effective treatment may be one with knee rehab
My best answer is my first answer because autograft is the treatment with the most success.  Stem cell treatment is new and not many people know about, and there is still things unknown about the treatment process.  Sometimes knee rehab alone is bad for the knee, because sometimes leaving the knee alone can cause future complications within the knee.
(2) What process did you take to arrive at this answer?
It all first started when I tore my ACL.  By that time I already decided what my topic was and what it was going to be about, so I knew that I would have to get surgery.  The process of seeing whether or not my ACL was torn was long, but we eventually found out that it was torn.  They said that I could leave it alone, but not do anything really active, or I could have surgery done and return to my physical activities.  So I chose having surgery done on my knee, and with that I decided to look up surgery as a treatment for a torn ACL.  I didn't realize at the time that this was my best answer.  I only realized until I finally found my last two answers that I realized that my first answer was my best.

(3) What problems did you face?  How did you resolve them?
Some problems that I faced were finding my second and third answers, and finding a source for esa.  For my second and third answer, Purther helped give me ideas on which I could expand upon, and I used google advanced search to help me look for a valid source for my esa.

(4) What are the two most significant sources you used to answer your essential question and why?
The two most significant sources that I used to answer my eq are my mentor Georgine Hernandez and the information that Kaiser gave me when I was receiving surgery.

Blog 19:Independent Component 2

Literal

(a)  “I, Daniel Song, affirm that I completed my independent component which represents 30 hours of work.”

(b) Cite your source regarding who or what article or book helped you complete the independent component
My mentor Georgine Hernandez, and my doctor Dr. Meletus.
www.regenexx.com

(c) Provide a digital spreadsheet (aka log of the 30 hours).   Post it next to your mentorship log.

(d) Explanation of what you completed.  What I did for the Independent Component 2
What I did for the Independent Component 2 was learn about procedures that people who choose not undergo ACL reconstruction.  I continued with my therapy and learned more about treatment after ACL surgery and also more about ACL surgery from Dr.Meletus.  During my Independent Component 2 I also found a new treatment for an ACL, which became my second answer.

INTERPRETIVE
Defend your work and explain how the significant parts of your component and how it demonstrates 30 hours of work.   Provide evidence (photos, transcript, art work, videos, etc) of the 30 hours of work.

APPLIED

How did the component help you answer your EQ? Please include specific examples to illustrate how it helped.
The Component helped me answer my EQ for my answers 1 and 3, and also partly with my answer 2.  I learned firsthand different exercises that the P.T's give to the patients and the test that the doctor does to test how stable the reconstructed knee is both before the surgery and after the surgery.  The component overall helped me with supporting reasons for my answers, and different things that I could do for my activities.
